German-born artist Frederik Büttgen (*1981) began his career in portrait photography at the photo studio Clemens Kerkhoff in Düsseldorf. A clear, conceptual and straightforward approach has characterized Büttgen's work ever since: Whether people or landscapes, which he began shooting during his studies under Dirk Reinartz in Kiel, he places an emphasis on strong compositions that are typically purist.
Straight lines, clear forms, and moderate colouring: Büttgen's works are about finding beauty in simplicity, rather than extravagance.
With this series of photographs, Büttgen stepped into the world of large format photography and utilized its effects of affective intensity to enhance the thematic content displayed. By means of digital post-processing, the artist employed a stylistic device that allowed him to develop a unique visual language in which vivid colours and sharp tones create an allure of intricate detail.
